Phil Roberts has been playing the (Irish) Pub circuit in Europe for 25 years: from Amsterdam, Flensburg and Dortmund to Stuttgart, Antwerp, The Hague, Freiburg, Zurich and Berlin. And the list goes on…
Now Live in The Shakespeare, Herdecke’s (English) Pub
Phil Roberts is now based in Koblenz and plays an eclectic mix of music covering most styles: Rock, Indie, Pop, Country and Folk from Elvis to the Kings of Leon. His powerful voice is often commented on, playing music from the 60’s through to the 20‘s with songs from Stone, CCR, Eagles, Steve Earle, Johnny Cash, Bib Dylan, Foo Fighters, Killers, Pink Floyd, Steve Winwood, Oasis and The Doors. And also a few of his own songs to enliven the evening.
Why I play the music I play?

Because I love it myself!“
Phil Roberts arrived in Amsterdam back in 1997: bankrupt, with £20 pounds and an old Harmony Sovereign. He had one night booked in the Tara – the biggest Irish Pub in Amsterdam – and a week booked in Molly Malone’s and The Academy in the Reeperbahns Hans Albers Platz, where he is now has as a Legendary Status! Phil ended up doing two weeks there and was quickly booked for the whole year. He then met a Canadian in Hamburg, then another in Amsterdam who both gave him lists of Pubs and venues across Europe.
Through his love of music, he was able to keep his house in the UK, pay off his debts and by the house in Germany he now lives in as well as play a Gibson Songwriter!
I have been 25 years on the road with no plan. Taking each day as it comes. And never looking back!“

Early Stage experiences means that „I’ve no stage fright!“
Phil Roberts started singing in the church choir at an early age, to get out of going to Sunday school. Aged 10 years he sang Jerusalem to the whole church: „so I’ve no stage fright“.
„You’re totally lost in the music!“
During his school days he played in several local bands. One Band was called Room Service, „I gave a demo cassette to Martin Hannett, who played it to a guy from Melody Maker. This got us a plug in the Melody Maker and our tracks played on BBC Radio Manchester. I was the only one who wanted to make a living playing music, but I wasn’t wanting to be a full on Rock Star, more like John Mayall. My last girlfriend said, if/when we split up, you shouldn’t have [another] girlfriend as „you’re totally lost in the music!“
In his early career he did an audition playing solo acoustic. Joy Division, or Warsaw as they were called then, were also there, but they were looking for Bands. My friend, Dennis Leigh aka John Foxx was the founder and original singer of Ultravox! I promoted the first gig when they were called Tiger Lily.
At an end of your party of Simply Red’s I ended up with Terrence Trent D’Arby sat on my knee as we tried to see how many people we could get on a chair. I even smoked a joint with Rod Argent back stage at Lancaster University.
I met Pink Floyd on the balcony of the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. And opened for Hawkwind at the Stonehenge festival.
I’ve also met and hung out with Gil Scot Heron twice. Once back stage at Glastonbury and once in the Fabrik in Hamburg and was a guest roadie for New Order on the debut at Glastonbury.
And I’ve been in Michael Eavis’s living room!
