Speakers‘ Corner 2.0 relaunches with a new three-part format

Herdecke, 9 September 2026. The Shakespeare’s monthly English conversation evening, Speakers‘ Corner, has a new shape. Every evening now runs in three half-hour parts: small talk, one announced theme, and „my week“ — everyone tells a short story from their own life — followed by open conversation until 21:00. One house rule applies in the theme round: everyone speaks once before anyone speaks twice.

Upcoming themes are climate change (13 October), Herdecke in 2040 (10 November) and German traditions explained to a British visitor (8 December). A one-page theme sheet with vocabulary and questions is published before each evening at the-shakespeare.pub.

„A cosy chat is nice, but nobody gets better at a language that way,“ says landlord Nathaniel Stott, a native English speaker. „A theme you can prepare for, and a story you have to tell — those are the two things that actually train a language. Both work best with a drink in your hand.“

Speakers‘ Corner takes place every second Tuesday of the month, 19:00 – 21:00, at The Shakespeare · Pub, Hauptstraße 38, Herdecke. Free, no booking, all levels welcome.
