“A working-class poet (…) with a knack for straightforward language held aloft by a sweet gift for melody.“ ”
— Boulevard Magazine
Paul O’Brien is a singer-songwriter-instrumentalist with a gift for going straight to the emotional heart of the story and taking his listeners with him.
Just like Ozzy Osbourne and Peaky Blinders, Paul was born in Birmingham, England (though he admits his similarities with those two things ends quickly afterwards). Born to Irish parents, he became captivated by Irish music and song and you can definitely hear that in his own music.
Paul now calls Nova Scotia home, and his new album „Years and Not Just Days“ celebrates this fact — not only with the songs and stories, but because the producer and player on the album is JP Cormier, perhaps the East Coast of Canada’s greatest instrumentalist.
Paul sings with reflection and sorrow about the effects of ignorance and intolerance (past and present) and with joy and gratitude about the natural beauty of his adopted home of Canada. He tells stories of family; of love lost and found; of the immigrant’s sense of alienation; the loneliness of leaving home and starting over in a new place; and of irrepressible optimism and the excitement of new adventure.
An evening and concert with Paul is like a night with candles, comfy slippers, a nice glass of Bretz red wine, and a warm feeling like a good book or movie can so often give. He writes and sings songs for his audience to relate to, and he tells stories that are sometimes longer than the songs. The sound of the audience singing together will make you feel alive — and then you realize you are singing too!
